After serving the State of Illinois for approximately 20 years, and holding the master contract for the Chicago region for the last five years, Seville Staffing is proud to announce that it has been awarded the contract for the rest of the state! Commencing September 29, 2011, Seville successfully bid to take over the contracts for all of the temporary staffing needs that are overseen by Central Management Services.

Seville is honored to be awarded this opportunity and has just opened a branch office in Springfield at One West Old State Capitol Plaza, Suite 710, at the corner of Fifth and Washington.

Seville brings a hands-on, face-to-face approach to each of its contracts, and Seville’s principal owner and manager, Janet Sloan has been meeting with each temporary employee and State liaison. As it has in the past, Seville looks to earn everyone’s respect throughout this process by hard work and a personal touch.

Seville Temp Goes to China

Employers sometimes assume that people work with a temp agency simply because they are unable to find work elsewhere. This is a common misconception, but temps come in “all shapes and sizes,” with a wide variety of expertise and reasons for temping.

Bill Endsley, one of Seville’s temporaries, is a perfect example: he specializes in accounting and business development, has worked for large non-profit organizations in the past, and is a published author. But don’t call looking for him, he won’t be available. He’s going to China.

Seville placed Bill at the Appraisal Institute, a non-profit association of professional real estate appraisers, as an accounting clerk working with cash receipts in 1994. Fast forward to 2006, and you would have found Bill as the Director of International Relations, working to develop the association’s international market. As Bill explains, “I realized that this was something I wanted to do more of,” so in 2007 he started his own consulting business.

World Citizen Consulting LLC, founded by Bill in 2007, provides international market development, specializing in the civil society sector for real estate. Bill explained that many places in the developing world don’t even have mortgages, so property has to be purchased outright. These countries usually consist of citizens who are either very rich or very poor. Without mortgages, the less fortunate cannot buy property. “Countries must create the infrastructure to develop the housing market.” Bill is currently working with the Center for International Private Enterprise, a subsidiary of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, to develop a common measurement tool for gauging the strength of a real estate market, something that up to this point has not existed. This project has included desk and field research in Armenia, China, Kenya and the Philippines. Bill’s assignment is China, where he will spend a week investigating whether the conclusion of their new standard is accurate.

Bill has had a very successful career as both a professional and small business owner, but as he explained, “Consulting income is not steady. You may do work in October and November, but not get paid until January or February.” Working with Seville allows Bill income between consulting jobs, and the flexibility he needs. “They are very understanding with scheduling. I attend a lot of networking events and luncheons that might require me to take a long lunch. Temping allows me the flexibility I need.” Bill also pointed out that he enjoys doing a wide variety of work, and that temping allows him to do different things because he’s not locked into the same job. “It fits my personality,” he concluded.

Expanding Your Business? Use a Temp.

Not all businesses realize that using a temporary employee can actually help expand their company. Seville Staffing recently spoke with one of its clients, Language Stars, to find out why they needed a temporary employee and how it helped them to grow their business.

Language Stars is the national leader in foreign language education for children ages 12 months to 12 years old. Using native speaking teachers, Language Stars provides foreign language courses in Spanish, Mandarin, French, Italian and German. Founded in 1998, Language Stars has 16 locations in the Chicagoland area, and recently expanded to both the D.C. and Tri-State Metro (NY, NJ & CT) areas.

According to Lee Kantz, Chief Marketing and Enrollment Officer for Language Stars, the greatest benefit of using a temporary employee is the flexibility. Language Stars initially needed extra help with their customer support and enrollment. As Kantz explained, “Just the presence of another person in a temporary capacity has given us greater flexibility. But I would say, added to that, is the flexibility of the staffing agency to try to find the right solution for us, find the right person for us.”

Using a temporary employee was crucial in Language Stars efforts to grow their business. Kantz explained that as the company was expanding into new geographical regions, using a temporary employee enabled the company to see where extra personnel was needed, and prioritize their staffing needs. Kantz concluded that using a temporary employee, “Enabled us to kind of walk before we ran on a few different initiatives.”

Flexibility is key when expanding your business. Staffing firms give companies the flexibility to increase their workforce quickly and efficiently, accommodating increased work flow, plus they save businesses time by providing an employee with the necessary skills and experience, so business owners and managers don’t have to spend countless hours looking for that perfect fit. When asked whether using a temporary employee helped Language Stars grow their business, Kantz replied, “Absolutely.”

What Is a Staffing Agency?

This post begins a series of articles explaining what staffing companies do, and how to use them. It is intended as a general overview for those without any experience working with a temporary agency. Keep a lookout for follow up articles in the coming months.

Do you know what a staffing agency does? Where do all the temporary employees come from? And what is the point of using an agency? Isn’t it easier (and cheaper) just to find someone on your own?

At its most basic, a staffing agency is a company that connects employers with potential candidates.

Staffing agencies maintain pools of candidates, and no, they are not miraculously created, grown in jars, nor are they kept locked in a cage until someone calls. These candidates are specifically recruited for their abilities and registered with the agency, without charge to the candidate or client. They have been tested for their computer software skills, background checked, and interviewed by a staffing professional for their personalities and “fit” with potential employers. The agency must keep in constant touch with them, as some may get other jobs or have other changes taking them in or out of the pool.

As an employer, you are almost ensured better success working with a staffing agency than finding someone on your own—all the leg work has been done for you, plus you have the option to screen, interview and even “try out” selected candidates. Best of all, these candidates remain the employees of the agency throughout the duration of their employment, and the agency, not the client, is responsible for all associated costs. These costs include the spectrum of employment taxes, unemployment and workers’ comp insurance, any benefits and much of the liability associated with the employment relationship. All of this can add a hefty percentage to the base pay amount.

Staffing agencies offer a variety of services:

Temporary: Assignments vary in length from several hours to open-ended or multi-year assignments. The agency charges an hourly rate for the cost of the temporary, which includes all associated employment expenses.
Temp-to-Hire: This option is perfect for the company that needs someone long term, but would like to take them for a “test drive” first. Temp-to-hire means that the staffing agency finds an acceptable candidate, who works for the client as a temporary employee for a set amount of time, after which the company can continue to use them as a temp, or hire them permanently free of charge.
Direct Hire: Think “head hunters”. Staffing agencies act as a recruiter, finding one or more candidates that match your needs, and providing them to you at either a fixed rate or a set percentage of the employee’s annual salary.

Using a staffing agency can save an employer considerable lost time and wasted effort, because they focus their resources and experience on finding employees with the right background and personality. Using temporary employees is a great solution for companies with a dynamic workload. What could be better than calling in an experienced secretary, graphic designer or salesperson just when you need them most, without any long-term commitments, and even having them show up on short notice?

Owning and running a business is difficult enough without having to worry about all the hiring and firing that comes with being your own HR department. Many times, it might be easier and more cost effective to have someone else do it for you.
